After receiving an invitation to an information and discussion event about „New genetic engineering: future technology or greenwashing?“ from the house of EU, 7e got the chance to participate in a really interesting meeting. The event started with three expert inputs, the speakers were Ms Margret Engelhart (Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, Germany), Ms Katherine Dolan (Association ARCHE NOAH) and Mr Andreas Heissenberger (Austrian Environment Agency) who talked about their fields of work. After listening to these lectures and questions form the audience Thomas Waitz (Die Grünen) and Günther Sidl (SPÖ), both members of the European Parliament, clearly set out their positions. In the second part of the event, the invited guests had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with the MEPs. It was an interesting event in which we learnt a lot about the approval of plants in which new genetic engineering methods such as CRISPR/Cas gene scissors are used and their possible fast-track approval.
